It has emerged that his name is on a list of banned persons to America, along with many former struggle activists who were banned during apartheid.

The businessman found that, although the ban had been lifted, many names had not been removed from the list. Said Sexwale’s lawyer Lesley Mkhabela.
"He has instructed us to take the matter up with the authorities of the US so we will address the letter to the US embassy in South Africa,"

According to the SABC, the lawyer has confirmed that they will also send the copy to the state's departments requiring clarification on the status of this issue and also assuring that this shall not happen again in the future.

PRETORIA - Businessman Tokyo Sexwale has lodge a complaint with the US Embassy in Pretoria, following his brief arrest in the US.

He was detained at the JF Kennedy airport in New York last Monday.

South African struggle activists were banned from visiting America during the apartheid era.

The ban has since been lifted, but not all names have been removed from the list.

Sexwale’s lawyer Lesley Mkhabela says the former housing minister was detained while on a business trip, and was denied contact with his family or lawyer.

Sexwale is said to have been surprised by the arrest, as the trip was not his first to the US since the end of apartheid.
