The babies were found wrapped in a black plastic bag and left next to the road about ten days ago. One of the babies died but the other is struggling for life in hospital.
“We’re still investigating. The mother has not yet been found,” says police spokesman Hitler Ngwenya.
Meanwhile, according to a report by Eyewitness News, Gauteng authorities have admitted that a trend has emerged where more children are being murdered by their mothers.
Sexual Offences Unit Operational Head Brigadier Bafana Linda has told the Sunday Times that almost 500 life sentence convictions relating to various types of attacks on children have been secured over the past financial year alone.
A World Health Organisation study released in May states more than 1 000 child murders took place in South Africa in 2009.
Over a third of the victims were killed by an acquaintance and nearly 30 percent were murdered by their mothers.
