BLOOD was again spilt in Marikana next to the koppie on which 34 miners were shot dead by police on August 16 last year.
This time, though, the blood belonged to a bull, the first of eight to be slaughtered ahead of the official launch of the Economic Freedom Fighters party today.
Yesterday morning, party leader Julius Malema, in his trademark red but without the beret, grabbed the knife and downed the first bull.
"I told you I was good at this," he said after the bull went down.
Before the slaughter, Malema, who arrived in a convoy of five luxury German cars, held a 20-minute meeting with his lieutenants, including central command member Floyd Shivambu and spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi.
As the men skinned the beast, Malema walked away with a small entourage for a moment behind the koppie to show his respect to the dead miners.
"It's a traditional thing to appease the ancestors," Ndlozi said.
"When you have a ceremony, including weddings and birthday parties, you slaughter.
"The masses of our people who will be here today for the birth of this giant must eat. There is going to be a great feast here," he said.
Shivambu, brandishing an Okapi pocket knife, did not go anywhere near blood.
He looked the other way as Malema stuck the knife in.
